Rebel girls knock off undefeated Denver in ranked clash
REINBECK — Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls basketball upended previously-undefeated Denver, 49-45, in a meeting of two top-10 ranked teams at G-R High School last Friday, Jan. 24.
The Rebels, ranked ninth in Class 1A as of this past Monday, improved to 13-2 overall; 2A No. 7 Denver dropped to 15-1.
Trailing 45-43 with 75 seconds left in the game, Kennedy Brant hit a 3-pointer to push the Rebels ahead by one. Denver’s ensuing possession ended in a turnover with 47 seconds to go. On the next Rebels trip down the court, Elly Sieh hit a 3-pointer with one second left on the shot clock, and 11 seconds left in the game, to push the lead to four points, and Denver couldn’t get a shot to fall in response before time expired.
G-R’s lead was as large as 10 points in the third quarter but a Denver rally set up a see-saw fourth quarter before the Rebels pulled away.
