Comet volleyball sweeps GMG

GARWIN – BCLUW volleyball buzzed past GMG in a 3-0 sweep at GMG High School on Thursday, Sept. 26.

The Comets, ranked seventh in last week’s Class 1A rankings from the IGHSAU, won 25-4, 25-11, 25-10 to improve to 13-3 overall and 5-0 in the Iowa Star South.

For the Wolverines, Landry August notched three kills, while Olivia Maddux and Rhianna Murty each had two apiece. Murty also had two blocks.

Of GMG’s 18 total digs, August recorded five, Maddux had four, and the trio of Hadlee Hempy, Ava Maddux, and Makayla Pendleton all added three digs apiece.

At the serve line, Murty was 3-for-3 with one ace. August went 7-for-8.

Grace Farnsworth slammed 13 kills for the Comets, Olivia Peters chipped in eight kills and Virginia Kaisand had seven kills as well as two total blocks.

Klayre Gallentine held down the back row with 13 digs and Raegan Crawford added six digs. Crawford was also 24-of-25 from the service line and three ace serves — Elise Engle added three more Comet aces.

This week, the Wolverines (13-8) will play Collins-Maxwell (3-14) in a road matchup on Thursday before taking on Valley Lutheran at home next week Tuesday, Oct. 8 as part of Senior Night.

As of Tuesday, Oct. 1, GMG (2-2) was fourth in the Iowa Star-South while No. 7 BCLUW leads the conference, followed by No. 9 North Tama in second and Baxter in third.
