Secretary of Ag speaks at Ag Street 2019 By Margaret Thomsen

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig was a featured speaker during the Ag Street 2019 seminar held recently at the Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel. Naig focused his thoughts on the variability and extremes facing agriculture. The weather in 2018 showed Bloomfield with 8” below average in moisture and Okiboji at 10″ above. He talked about the uncertainty of trade with foreign countries, stating “We need to look for new markets – we need to expand.” Also addressed were the issue of animal disease and research, water quality and reducing erosion and the adoption of more cover crops. He is hoping that more freedom to operate and less interference from EPA will help Iowa expand nutrient capture in wet lands while allowing farmers to do it at a feasible cost.
