Meggers’ Memo: The Start of a New Session
At 10:00 a.m. on January 13th, the 91th General Assembly of the State of Iowa convened the 2025 legislative session. Last year, I worked with Iowa House Republicans to pass laws that would better Iowa communities. This is my second term in the Iowa House of Representatives, serving as the Vice Chair of the Labor and Workforce Committee. I also serve on the Agriculture, Transportation, Ways and Means, and Public Safety Committees.
One of the biggest things we can do to directly help Iowans weather the storm of inflation is cut taxes, which we have done effectively with the income tax. More income taxes were just implemented on January 1st lowering all taxpaying Iowans’ income tax rate to 3.8%. Democrats often talk about wanting to help Iowans with high costs, but they really don’t have a leg to stand on. They voted against every income tax cut we’ve passed over the last few years. Their claims that these tax cuts only benefit the wealthy don’t hold any water. All taxpaying Iowans have had their tax rate lowered by Iowa Republicans.
An issue we heard about consistently from Iowans this election cycle was illegal immigration. We will explore policies to further our efforts to keep our schools safe, properly fund public safety, and root out crimes related to illegal immigration like drug and human trafficking.
Every child in Iowa deserves the opportunity for a bright future. This session, we will ensure Iowa laws are protecting our youth and setting them up for success in life. We must make sure that we supporting kids born into tough situations. This can include taking a comprehensive look at improving our foster care system and lowering the cost of adoption to ensure high costs don’t prevent a child from a loving home.
