George D. Chizek, 88

George D. Chizek, 88, of Gladbrook, IA passed away Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at his residence. Funeral services were Saturday, February 2, 2013, at the Gladbrook United Methodist Church. Visitation was Friday, February 1, 2013, at the Gladbrook Chapel of the Anderson Funeral Homes. Interment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Gladbrook. Online condolences may be sent to www.andersonfhs.com George was born in rural Tama County on September 24, 1924 to Frank and Mary (Patava) Chizek. He attended rural county schools through the elementary grade and graduated from Gladbrook High School in 1942. On October 23, 1944 he married Phyllis G Kaput at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. George served in the US Navy during World War II. Upon returning to Iowa he began farming until 1984 when they moved to Gladbrook for retirement. George’s hobby was woodworking in his shop. George was a member of the Gladbrook United Methodist Church and American Legion Post # 127, where he served as a past commander and other offices. For several years he was on the Lincoln Coop Board. His family, friends and neighbors were all gratefully appreciated by him throughout his life. George is survived by his wife, Phyllis, two children; Kevin (Kathleen) Chizek of Beaman, Kathy (Robert) Herink of Gladbrook, three grandchildren, Kyle Chizek of DesMoines, Kortney (Peter) Moore of Chicago and Grant Herink of Cedar Rapids, two great grandchildren; Blake and Audra Moore of Chicago, one niece Bonnie (Robert) Murty of Traer. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and brother in law, Evelyn (Marvin) Bern.
