Tama County’s new sheriff is no butterfingers, triumphs in local pie baking contest

GLADBROOK – Tama County Sheriff Casey Schmidt (R-Dysart) was quite possibly ‘filling’ like a million bucks last Saturday, Jan. 18, at the Tama County Pork Producers annual banquet in Gladbrook after his homemade butterfinger pie won first place in the men’s division of the best pie competition.

Out of the many tasty entries, Sheriff Schmidt’s scrumptious whipped filling more than won over the judges’ tastebuds inside the Memorial Building on Saturday night where he was in attendance to accept a donation check on behalf of the Tama County Sheriff’s Office for the K-9 program.

Schmidt became county sheriff this past Jan. 1 after winning election last November to replace now-retired Sheriff Dennis Kucera. Before assuming office, Schmidt spent many years with the department as a deputy working alongside K-9 Deputy Tyson who has since retired and now resides in Dysart with Schmidt and his young family.

Sheriff Schmidt told the newspaper his department is currently working to bring on a new K-9 deputy and will have an announcement soon.
