Tama County Public Health welcomes new staff

TOLEDO – Tama County Public Health is pleased to introduce two new staff members, Tammy Schuett and Melanie Blocker.

Tammy Schuett is Tama County Public Health & Home Care’s new LPN. She is taking on the department’s new Public Health Nursing position. Tammy has lived in Tama County all her life up until the last six years when her family moved to Holiday Lake in Brooklyn.

Tammy has worked for 25 years as an LPN in long-term care, at the Iowa Juvenile Home, in occupational care, and at local health clinics. With her years of experience, she has worked closely with the immigrant populations at Iowa Premium. She has also volunteered with the Tama Ambulance as an AEMT.

“My favorite part about being a nurse is providing one-on-one care, teaching and making a difference in their life,” Tammy said.

She continued, “My husband Steve and I have three children who gave us seven outstanding grandkids. Three boys and four girls. So, in our spare time, we love spending time with them fishing, boating, rock hunting, and going to their sporting events.”

Melanie Blocker is Tama County Public Health & Home Care’s newest case manager.

“Being a nurse is a calling to me and something that I decided I wanted to do right out of high school,” Melanie explained.

After graduating from North Tama High School, Melanie attended Wartburg College and Marshalltown Community College to obtain her nursing license. 

“I have been in the nursing profession for 30 years and started out as a certified nursing aide before I obtained my LPN and then I went back to school and became an RN in 2001,” she said.

“I have worked in acute care for some of my nursing career but most of my nursing career has been in long-term care, working mainly at Sunny Hill Care Center in Tama.”

In terms of her move to Public Health, Melanie said she was ready to “try something different.”

Melanie lives in Tama with her fiance Eric. She has a son, Tyler, who lives in Ankeny, while her daughter Avery lives in Clutier.  Melanie enjoys spending time with her family and being outside. 

“I am looking forward to serving the residents of Tama County who need our services.”
